According to the May 3, 2010 issue of Forbes Magazine, women are still paid 80% of what men are paid. In spite of this fact, the pay gap between the genders has been closing in recent years. As more women become highly educated and the main earners in their families, they are choosing jobs that pay top dollars for their skills.
Women in Pharmacy
Pharmacists are individuals who distribute medication to patients. These health care professionals counsel patients on drug usage and help health practitioners select and understand medications that are prescribed for patients. Some pharmacists are able to give vaccines to patients. Women pharmacist average approximately $76,500 yearly.
Pharmacists work in a drug store and/or hospitals. They also work for pharmaceutical companies developing new drugs and testing them for safety and effectiveness. Some pharmacist choose to work in the college setting as professors.
Pharmacists must be educated in an accredited school of pharmacy. Most earn a 4 year Doctor of Pharmacy degree. They must take licensing tests in order to practice in their field of study. Currently, women make up approximately half of the pharmacists in the United States. There is currently a shortage of pharmacists in the United States. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field of pharmacy is expected to grow by 17% through 2018.
Women Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
Women make up approximately 25% of all Chief Executive Officer (CEO) positions and earn approximately $81,000 a year. Although CEO’s are highly paid, they work long hours, many weekends and travel extensively.
Acquiring a Bachelors or Masters degree in business is often a requirement to become a CEO. CEOs are in charge of making sure that their company runs efficiently and well. They usually answer to a board of directors and have to work with other executives to ensure that problems are addressed and the company is moving in a positive direction. CEOs work for both non-profit and for profit organizations.
Women in Computer Programming
Women make up 21% of computer programmers. Computer programming is one of the career paths that women earn nearly the same amount of money as their male counterparts. Women computer programmers make approximately $62,000 yearly.
Computer programmers write computer programs by adapting design software programs into instructions that the computer can understand. Programmers are also able to repair, update, adapt and further develop computer programs that already exist. The Bureau of Labor Statistic projects a 21% increase for this career field through 2018.
